HIV Prevention & Sanitation
Designed for use by cosmetologists (including, but not limited to hairstylists, manicurists, barbers, and others as defined by local statutes) who might come into contact with blood or other body fluids during the course of their work. Topics covered include an overview of HIV/AIDS, HIV prevention, how it is spread, Universal Precautions (barrier protection, personal cleanliness, and disinfection), other bacterial, viral & fungal infections, sterilization and disinfection, distinction between disinfectants and antiseptics, sanitation of tools, hands, and other equipment and requirements for salon ventilation &cleanliness.
Learning Objectives
- Know the hazards of blood borne pathogens.
- Know strategies for avoiding/preventing contamination by blood borne pathogens
- Know how blood borne pathogens are spread.
- Know strategies for sterilizing and sanitizing various “sharp” instruments such as cutting blades, tweezers, shears, etc.
- Know strategies for disposal of contaminated materials such as piercing needles, cotton strips, etc.
- Know strategies for disposal of biological wastes, used “sharps”, etc.
- Know the hazards of other biological contaminants including bacterial, viral and fungal infections.

Final Exam- The final exam must be passed with a 70 percent in order to receive course credit. The final exam can be taken three times if necessary.
Pedicure Essentials
gives an extensive overview of pedicure, foot care and the professional role of a pedicurist. It describes the importance of sanitation, disinfection, disinfection procedures, & preparation of the pedicure area.
Also you will also learn how to choose products, how to perform different massage movements & special care pedicures. It also explains the different complimentary enhancements and ways to accomplish retailing and marketing.

Blood borne pathogens: Advanced
This course is for workers with potential occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials in the course of performing their assigned duties and tasks. Topics include an overview of the regulatory requirements covering bloodborne pathogens, symptoms of bloodborne diseases, recommended engineering control measures, proper disposal of contaminated materials, selection of personal protective equipment (PPE), corrective actions, information on post-exposure evaluation, and signs and labels. This course focuses on the requirements of OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1030 Subpart Z.

OSHA Recording
Description
This course is designed for private personnel who are required to maintain records of OSHA related incidents. OSHA has a specific set of rules for recordkeeping. Topics include a summary of some of the key provisions of the new OSHA recordkeeping rules, changes from previous OSHA recordkeeping rules, OSHA forms, and recording and reporting occupational injuries and illnesses.

Ear Piercing Policy
The Ohio State Board of Cosmetology approved the use of ear piercing guns per Ohio Administrative Code 3701-9-07 in licensed salons by Board licensees only.
The Board received a request from Inverness Corporation to allow the use of their product in salons. Kathleen Russell, Director of Regulatory Affairs for Inverness came to the September Board meeting and demonstrated the ear piercing gun. Based on review by the Board’s doctor and newest member, Dr. Marilyn Huheey, and the Board staff, the Board voted unanimously to approve the service in salons.
The following procedures are to be followed for Manufacturers and Salons wishing to offer ear piercing services:
Manufacturers:
Products offered for sale to Salons must meet the requirements of Ohio Administrative Code Subsection 3701-9-07.
Must provide the State Board with a copy of their training materials and certification process in order to sell to licensed salons.
Must provide the names and listings of all products to be sold.
Must provide a customer list of salons using equipment and record of training provided by individual name at each salon on a quarterly basis on the 15th of January, April, July and October.
Licensees:
Must prominently display the manufacturer’s certificate of training for ear piercing provided with their state license.
Must comply with manufacturers’ directions in the use of each product.
Must advise clients of the necessity to follow after care instructions.
